Historic Hotels of America is the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation® for recognizing and celebrating the finest historic hotels across America. Originally built in 1919 by Frederick William Vanderbilt, the historic Grand Dame hotel was once the social epicenter of San Juan, and was meticulously restored and reopened in December 2014. Designed by the firm Warren and Wetmore, whose work includes the New York Biltmore Hotel and Grand Central Station, the Vanderbilt was once a destination for royalty, heads of state, and Hollywood stars. In October 2012, the hotel began attracting gourmands with the 1919 Restaurant, lobby, bar, and banquet services. The final renovation phase has returned the Vanderbilt to the Roaring 20s style, sophistication and service for which the hotel was known.
