About this campground
After ascending northward up the steep slopes of California’s Klamath River Canyon, the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail reaches the watershed divide between the Klamath River drainage on the south and that of the Applegate River (a tributary of the Rogue River) to the north. Locally, this divide is known as the Siskiyou Crest. After passing Kangaroo Mountain and Lilypad Lake, skirting the edge of Red Buttes Wilderness, the trail stays on the south side of the divide (within the Klamath National Forest) as it winds across the reddish-orange peridotite rock of rugged Red Buttes. A few miles farther on, passing Brewer’s weeping spruce, the rare McNab cypress, and other vegetation endemic to the Siskiyou Mountains, the trail reaches the Siskiyou Crest at Cook and Green Pass, where two roads converge.
Getting there
Access Wrangle Gap: From Ashland, OR, drive south on Interstate 5 for 10 miles to the Mt. Ashland exit. Turn right and drive 0.25 mile to Mt. Ashland Road. Turn right on to Mt. Ashland Road, and continue on Forest Road 20 to Wrangle Gap. The trail begins to the right of the junction with Forest Road 20 and Forest Road 2030. Wrangle Campground is located 1 mile west of this junction on Forest Road 2030. Access Siskiyou Gap: From Ashland, OR, drive south on Interstate 5 for 10 miles to the Mt. Ashland exit. Turn right and drive 0.25 mile to Mt. Ashland Road. Turn right on to the Mt. Ashland Road and drive 17 miles to where the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail crosses Forest Road 20, which is 1.0 mile west of the junction with Forest Road 22 and Forest Road 20. There is parking for 2-3 vehicles in a turnout area. Access Grouse Gap: From Ashland, OR, drive south on Interstate 5 for 10 miles to the Mt. Ashland exit. Turn right and drive 0.25 mile to Mt. Ashland Road. Turn right on to the Mt. Ashland Road and follow for 11.2 miles to the junction with Forest Road 40S30 (Grouse Gap shelter is 0.25 mile from this junction). The trail crosses Forest Road 40S30 at this junction and proceeds south to the Forest Boundary. Access Forest Boundary Sign: From Ashland, OR, drive south on Interstate 5 for 10 miles to the Mt. Ashland exit. Turn right and drive 0.25 mile to Mt. Ashland Road. Turn right on to Mt. Ashland Road and continue 7.2 miles to the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Boundary sign. Parking is available for 3-4 vehicles in the turn out area. The trail begins just to the left of the highway, signed with a large Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail marker.
