About this campground
Overview The Sage Creek Cabin is located in the Pryor Mountains on the Custer Gallatin National Forest. The cabin was built in 1892 to serve as a line cabin for horse and cattle operations before transitioning into the administrative office for the Pryor Mountain Ranger District in 1908. Today, the building's character is still reminiscent of the 1920's when the north wing and kitchen area were added to the original squared shaped building. Sage Creek Cabin is an excellent place to spend time relaxing, or an excellent base camp for spending time in the beautiful Pryor Mountains. Recreation Recreation in the area consists of: • OHV riding • Fishing • Hunting • Hiking • Nature viewing Facilities The Sage Creek Cabin is a rustic cabin that offers limited amenities. There are two sleeping areas that are furnished with two bunkbeds, four twin mattresses in total. A limited kitchen that has no stove/oven, refrigerator, or running water. Two living areas that are furnished with a large dining table and a wood stove, firewood is not provided. The cabin is not fully accessible. There is an ADA ramp that leads into the cabin and provides access to the kitchen, one living area, and one bedroom, however, the rest of the cabin is not ADA accessible. There is an outhouse located 50 feet from the cabin that has no accessible path leading to it. The cabin has electricity. The only source of heat is a wood stove. Natural Features The Pryor Mountains are underlain by ancient granites and gneisses that date back 3.0 – 4.0 billion years. The same seas that deposited the sedimentary rocks in the Beartooths covered the ancestral Pryors and deposited the same types of rocks. The Pryors are known for the extraordinary caves that have formed through erosion in the exposed Madison Limestone formation that is ever present in this area. The Sage Creek cabin is situated in a draw, just above Sage Creek, at the foot of Big Pryor Mountain. The area around the cabin is characterized by high desert and lies at the foot of predominantly Doug Fir forests at the higher elevations.
