About this campground

The St. James Hotel MN, built in 1875 and a member of Historic Hotels of America® since 2000 was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Historic Hotels of America is the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation® for recognizing and celebrating the finest historic hotels across America. One of America's longest running hotels, the St. James was built along the banks of the Mississippi River in 1875 in Red Wing, Minnesota, the era's largest wheat-trade market. Civic-minded businessmen of the time recognized the need for a world-class hotel and commissioned the design of this distinctive five-story Italianate structure. The first guests marveled at the hotel's modern features, including steam heat, hot and cold running water, and a state-of-the-art kitchen. Its renowned restaurants became a regular stop on the nearby Empire Builder rail line. Today, the St. James has been faithfully restored to its original 19th-century character; it serves as a landmark for both business and leisure travelers drawn to scenic Red Wing.
